The Humboldt Vapor Emission Test Kit provides a practical method for determining the moisture vapor emission rate (MVER) of concrete subfloors. The test helps evaluate whether a concrete slab is suitable for the installation of floor coverings or coatings by quantifying the amount of water vapor emitted from the slab over a defined period.
The method uses anhydrous calcium chloride, which absorbs moisture vapor released by the concrete. By measuring the weight gained by the calcium chloride during the test period, the moisture vapor emission rate can be calculated and expressed for the concrete floor area.

The Humboldt kit supports ASTM F1869, the standard test method for measuring moisture vapor emission from concrete subfloors using anhydrous calcium chloride. This type of testing is commonly performed before installing moisture-sensitive flooring systems and coatings.
Simple On-Site Test Procedure
Each test uses a calcium chloride container placed on the prepared concrete surface beneath a specially designed sealed dome. After the prescribed exposure period, the calcium chloride is weighed again. The change in weight, together with the exposure time and test area, is used to determine the moisture vapor emission rate.
