Wood-Species Calibration for More Meaningful Measurements

Different wood species can produce different electrical responses at the same moisture content. The TimberMaster addresses this through eight built-in calibration scales covering 150 wood species. Users select the appropriate calibration scale for the timber being tested, allowing the meter to provide measurements better matched to the particular wood species.

Pin-Type Moisture Measurement

The TimberMaster uses pin electrodes to measure moisture in wood. Its measurement range extends from 7.9% to 99% moisture content (MC),with readings above 30% treated as relative values. Within the 8% to 30% WME range, specified accuracy is ±1%, with ±3% accuracy outside this range.

The standard WME pins provide a maximum needle depth of approximately 10 mm (0.4 in). For applications requiring measurements farther beneath the wood surface, the TimberMaster can also be used with an optional hammer electrode.

Measure Moisture Below the Surface

An optional slide-hammer electrode allows the TimberMaster to investigate moisture below the immediate timber surface. This is particularly useful when surface conditions may not represent the moisture level deeper within the material. Protimeter specifies subsurface measurement to a depth of approximately 30 mm (1 3/16 in) when the appropriate hammer electrode is used.

Automatic Temperature Compensation

Wood temperature can influence pin-type moisture readings. When timber temperature differs significantly from approximately 20°C (70°F),the TimberMaster can be used with the optional temperature sensor. Once connected, the instrument automatically compensates the displayed moisture value for the effect of timber temperature, helping improve measurement reliability under colder or warmer conditions.
