Macadamia is a genus of trees indigenous to Australia, which is well known for its edible fruit, the macadamia nut. The seed, which is covered by a very hard shell, is frequently used as an ingredient in baked goods, confectioneries and breakfast cereals or consumed on its own.

Although the prevalence compared to other tree nuts is rather low, macadamia nuts can elicit severe allergic responses, especially in children. Hidden traces of macadamia nuts in food represent a critical problem for allergic individuals.
