Modified atmosphere packaging depends heavily on package integrity and optimum settings for the packaging machine. Oxygen measurements with the Model 905 can assist in setting up and maintaining the desired control parameters. Routine testing with the Model 905 can spot leaky or inadequately flushed packages resulting from defective material or equipment, increasing the efficiency of your packaging line and eliminating out of spec product.
The Model 905 can be used in all food applications, including meats, fresh produce, pasta, nuts, snack foods, dairy products and coffee. The sensor is unaffected by high levels of background gases such as nitrogen or carbon dioxide. The Model 905 can be applied where mixtures are used and the desired oxygen level is very high (25 to 100%). It is unaffected by trace hydrocarbons found in some applications, or high levels of carbon dioxide which can poison other types of sensors.
Many modified atmosphere applications make use of nitrogen flushing to exclude as much oxygen as possible from the food pack to extend shelf life. Depending on the food product, the desired maximum oxygen level can vary greatly, from 0.1 % to 5% or even higher. The Model 905 is ideal for measurements in this range and can be a valuable QC tool in maintaining target levels. 
The Model 905 is a rugged benchtop unit housed in a heavy-duty metal enclosure, well suited for continuous use in routine package testing in the laboratory or at the packaging line. With built-in battery operation in addition to the AC mode, this unit can be easily transported and used at remote locations where AC power may not be available.
The Model 905 has a built-in pump with electronically controlled timing function so that it operates only when sampling. Manual syringe operation is not needed. Sample is drawn through the probe, the small diameter inert tubing and then to the oxygen sensor when the pump is turned on. The pump is electronically timed to draw in the precise amount of sample required for the analysis, and then turns itself off after the pre-set sampling time.
Microprocessor based electronics are used for sensor signal processing, pump timing, battery charging and on/off control to provide high accuracy and reliability. The heavy duty, proprietary oxygen sensor is designed to provide many years of service, is totally sealed and requires no maintenance. The sensor output is compensated for ambient temperature variations.
